Valid US Visa in an Expired Passport: How UAE Residents Travel on a New Passport

October 13, 2026•7 min read

A passport can expire before the multi-year US visa inside it does, and a UAE resident then needs a new passport from their own embassy. The question that follows is always the same: does the visa still work once it sits in a passport that is no longer current? The short answer is yes, in most cases, but the conditions matter more than the headline. This is checked against the US Department of State's own guidance, as read on 28 September 2026 through an archived copy of its FAQ, because travel.state.gov blocks automated access.

What travel.state.gov Actually Says

The State Department's own visa guidance is direct: if your visa is still valid, you can travel with your two passports. A visa is not cancelled by the passport around it expiring; unless cancelled or revoked, it stays valid until its own expiration date. Travellers may use that visa, in the old passport, together with a current passport, for travel to and admission into the United States.

The instruction that follows matters as much as the principle: do not remove the visa foil from the old passport or try to transfer it into the new one. A visa is tied to the passport it was issued in, and detaching it voids it. Carry both passports, unaltered, to the airport.

Three conditions govern this, worth checking before departure rather than at the counter:

  • Both passports are from the same country and of the same type, for example both regular passports, not one regular and one official passport.
  • The visa itself is undamaged in the old passport.
  • The visa is the correct type for the purpose of the trip, exactly as it would need to be in a current passport.

At the port of entry, a Customs and Border Protection officer checks the visa in the old passport and stamps the current passport with an admission record if the officer decides to admit the traveller. Patriot Pro Travel & Tourism does not arrange or expedite this, and the decision to admit rests entirely with the officer.

A Changed Name or a Changed Nationality

A legal name change, most commonly after marriage, means a new passport, and the State Department's FAQ recommends applying for a new US visa afterwards to make travel easier. We could not confirm from the guidance we read that an existing visa in the old name stays usable on the new passport, so check with the US Embassy or Consulate before relying on it. An airline agent and then a CBP officer must connect the name on the old visa to the name on the current passport, so carry the marriage certificate or name-change order with both passports; where the name has changed substantially, a new visa removes the question entirely.

A changed nationality is different, because it is what the "same country" condition points at. If a traveller has naturalised elsewhere, the new passport is issued by a different country than the one that held the visa, so that condition is not met. The FAQ does not spell out this case, so treat a new application under the new nationality as the safe assumption and confirm with the embassy. It is the same principle behind every visa a UAE resident holds: passport nationality decides the rules, not UAE residence.

Other Visas Do Not Behave the Same Way

UAE residents often hold more than one visa across different passports, and the US rule above does not carry over automatically. The UK now issues most immigration permissions as a digital eVisa, held in a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) online account rather than as a sticker. Because the record is digital, a new passport has to be added to the account before travel: UKVI's own guidance states that travellers must travel with a valid passport or travel document added to their UKVI account, and that a traveller can update passport details, name and nationality in the account (a name or nationality change needs an identity document showing it). Simply carrying old and new UK passports together, as with a US visa, is not enough: if the account still shows the old passport, a carrier may refuse boarding, or delays can follow at the border. Older UK visa stickers remain valid on their own terms, but an eVisa needs the account updated first.

A Schengen visa sits closer to the US pattern, but the position is set by each issuing consulate, not by one EU-wide rule. the German Embassy in Kuwait's visa FAQ confirms a valid Schengen visa for the trip, held in an old passport, may be used with a new passport to travel to Germany, provided the new passport is attached to the old one and the name and biographical details match exactly; the same guidance tells travellers to reconfirm with the relevant embassy for any other Schengen country.

Checklist for Travel Day

  • Carry both passports: the current one for identity, the old one for the visa itself.
  • Check the visa foil in the old passport is intact, unmarked, and not tampered with.
  • Confirm both passports share the same nationality and type before assuming the visa still applies.
  • If the name has changed, carry the marriage certificate or name-change order with both passports.
  • For a UK eVisa, confirm the UKVI account shows the current passport before booking, not at the airport.
  • For a Schengen visa in an old passport, check the specific requirement with the issuing consulate.

Mistakes That Cause Problems at Check-In

The most common error is travelling with only the new passport, leaving the old one and its visa at home on the assumption a valid visa "should" transfer automatically. It has not, and without the passport that holds it, there is nothing valid to present. Airline staff may ask for both documents at check-in, but relying on that catch is not a plan. A second mistake is treating a US rule, a UK rule and a Schengen rule as one rule, when each behaves differently.

A Note on US Visa Interview Availability

Separately from the old-passport question, anyone applying for a new US visa, or needing an interview, should check appointment availability on the US Mission UAE's own visa page first. The Mission's security alert dated 1 September 2026 said limited non-immigrant visa appointments are available, while its visa page still said routine visa processing is not available in the UAE on 28 September; that position can change. Checking the US Mission UAE's visa page close to travel is the reliable way to know where things stand.

Questions UAE Residents Ask

Can I board my flight to the US if I only bring my new passport?

Not on the strength of a visa that is in the old one. The visa exists physically in the old passport, and without it there, an airline has nothing valid to check you in against. Bring both.

My old passport is damaged. Does the visa inside it still count?

Undamaged is one of the stated conditions, and the State Department says a damaged visa means reapplying for a new one at a US Embassy or Consulate. Resolve that before a trip is booked around it.

Does this same rule apply to my UK visa or my Schengen visa?

No, not automatically. A UK eVisa is a digital record tied to a UKVI account that must be updated with the new passport; older UK visa stickers remain valid on their own terms. A Schengen visa in an old passport can, on at least one country's own published guidance, be used with a new passport under specific conditions, but that is confirmed by the issuing consulate, not as an EU-wide rule.

I changed my name after marriage. Do I need a new US visa?

The State Department recommends applying for a new visa after a legal name change. Whether the old visa can still be used is something to confirm with the embassy first. Carry proof of the name change with both passports either way.

How Patriot Pro Travel & Tourism Helps

An old-passport visa question is easy to get right in principle and wrong in practice, which is where a second look before departure earns its place.

  • Reviewing which passport and visa combination applies to your specific trip and nationality.
  • Checking that a visa foil, name-change document, or supporting paperwork matches what the rules require.
  • Confirming the right visa type and route before an application or booking is made.
  • Flagging the mistakes that cause delays at check-in, before they happen at the counter.
  • Helping put together a complete, consistent document set for the trip.
  • Planning the wider itinerary around the visa position, rather than around assumptions about it.

If you are due a new passport and are not certain what that means for a visa already in your current one, that is worth checking before you book. Our US visa services cover exactly this kind of preparation, and our appointments guidance covers what to expect when a fresh application is actually needed.
