Uzbekistan Visa for UAE Residents: Visa-Free Entry, the E-Visa and What Your Residence Permit Changes
Samarkand's Registan and Bukhara's old quarter are a short flight from the UAE, close enough that Uzbekistan now sits on many UAE residents' shortlists alongside destinations they already treat as routine. The entry rules are easy to get wrong, because the country runs three separate routes across the same border, and which one applies to you depends on two facts: the passport you hold, and whether you hold a UAE residence permit.
Details below were checked against the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs' government portal, the Uzbekistan Embassy in the UAE and the Unified Interactive Government Services Portal on 28 September 2026. Eligibility lists, fees and processing figures are revised by the Uzbek authorities, so confirm your own case on the official portal before booking.
Start With the Passport, Not the Residence Permit
Uzbekistan publishes a list of nationalities that can enter without applying for any visa at all. A small group, including Kazakhstan, Russia and Azerbaijan, has no time limit; a much larger group, currently running to more than seventy countries and including the UAE itself, gets visa-free entry for up to 30 days. That list comes first for every UAE resident: check your own passport against it before assuming a residence permit changes anything. If your nationality is already on it, none of the routes below apply, and eligibility follows the passport, not the country you live in.
The 30-Day Route Built for UAE Residence
Separate from that nationality list is a route that exists specifically because of where you live. By presidential decree dated 20 March 2019, Uzbekistan established a visa-free regime for UAE citizens. An addition effective 1 January 2020 extended the same 30-day treatment to foreign nationals who hold UAE resident status, once two conditions are met together at entry: the original UAE resident visa must be valid for at least 90 days, and the national passport for at least 180 days, according to the Uzbekistan Embassy in the UAE. Holders of travel documents or refugee passports are excluded from this route regardless of residence status, and must apply for a sticker visa instead.
Read the two figures precisely. A residence permit or passport that clears the bar when you book can fall short of it by the date you actually travel, since the condition is checked at arrival, not at booking. The embassy's page is undated and refers to the "original UAE resident visa", so ask the embassy or your airline which residence document you will be asked to show.
If Neither Route Applies: the E-Visa at e-visa.gov.uz
Where a nationality sits outside both the visa-free list and the UAE-residence route, a further defined list of nationalities, including several common among UAE residents, can apply through the state portal e-visa.gov.uz without an in-person appointment: complete the online form with your personal details, passport information and purpose of visit, pay the consular fee online, and the application then goes for review by the authorities.
The government's consular fee schedule sets a single-entry electronic visa at USD 20, a double-entry visa valid up to 30 days at USD 35, and a multiple-entry visa valid up to 30 days at USD 50. The Unified Interactive Government Services Portal lists the standard processing term as two working days, excluding the submission day. If your nationality is not on the e-visa eligibility list, the route is a visa issued by an Uzbek embassy or consulate, which has its own document requirements and timeline.
Registering Your Stay Once You Arrive
Entry is not the end of the paperwork. Under a Cabinet of Ministers resolution simplifying registration for foreign citizens, arriving visitors must register their place of temporary stay within three days of entering Uzbekistan, through the accommodation provider or a territorial migration and citizenship office. Hotels are one of the two channels the Interior Ministry names, so a hotel stay normally covers it; confirm at check-in. Staying privately, with family or friends rather than at a hotel, means agreeing before the trip who will complete the registration through the migration office. Noncompliance carries an administrative penalty under Uzbekistan's Administrative Code, so it is not a formality worth skipping.
Document Checklist
- National passport that clears the specific validity window for your route: at least 180 days for the UAE-residence route, and whatever the portal states for the e-visa or nationality-list routes.
- If entering on UAE residence, the original resident visa or permit itself, valid for at least 90 days on the date of entry, not the date of booking.
- A return or onward flight booking.
- Confirmed accommodation details, since these feed directly into the registration requirement after arrival.
- For an e-visa application: your passport details, the purpose of your visit, a card for online payment, and a digital photo and passport scan ready in case the portal asks for them.
- A saved or printed copy of any e-visa approval to show on arrival.
Mistakes That Cost People Their Trip
The most common error is treating UAE residence as a blanket key to entry, when it is a specific route with its own two conditions, sitting alongside rather than replacing the nationality-based list. The second is letting a residence permit run close to expiry and only checking the 90-day figure when booking, not against the travel date. The third is paying for an e-visa when a passport was already on the visa-free list the whole time. The fourth is treating registration as optional when staying outside a hotel, the one part of the process that depends on the host rather than the traveller.
Getting the Sequence Right
Establish the route before committing to dates, not after. Check your passport against the visa-free list first; if it is not there, check whether the UAE-residence route applies, confirming both the 90-day and 180-day figures against your actual travel dates rather than today's. If neither applies, the two-working-day standard term listed for the e-visa is short enough to plan around once flights are close to confirmed. Two members of the same household, on different passports, can sit on entirely different routes for the same trip. Our visa and travel services cover this kind of cross-checking, alongside the wider set of destinations in our note on weekend trips from the UAE.
Questions UAE Residents Ask
Does holding a UAE residence visa alone let me enter Uzbekistan without applying for anything?
Only if it meets both conditions of the residence-based route: the resident visa valid for at least 90 days and your national passport valid for at least 180 days, both checked at entry. Holding UAE residence with less time remaining on either document does not qualify, and travel documents or refugee passports are excluded regardless of residence status.
My passport is not on the visa-free list and the UAE-residence route does not apply to me. What then?
Check whether your nationality is on the e-visa eligibility list at e-visa.gov.uz. If it is not, the visa is issued through an Uzbek embassy or consulate, which follows its own document and appointment process rather than the online portal.
Do I need to register my own stay if I am booked into a hotel?
Hotels are one of the official registration channels, so a hotel stay normally takes care of it; it is still worth confirming at check-in. It needs separate arrangement, through a territorial migration and citizenship office, if you are staying somewhere that is not a hotel.
Can a couple with different nationalities travel on the same UAE-residence route together?
Each traveller's own passport and residence documents are assessed independently. One partner meeting the 90-day and 180-day conditions does not extend that eligibility to a partner whose own documents fall short, even when they are travelling on the same booking.
How Patriot Pro Travel & Tourism Helps
A short-haul trip like this one is exactly where the paperwork gets skipped, because the distance makes the visit feel closer to routine than it is.
- Checking which of the three entry routes actually applies to your specific passport and residence status.
- Confirming your UAE residence permit and passport validity against the dates you plan to travel, not the date you book.
- Advising whether an e-visa application is needed at all, so you are not paying for a route you do not require.
- Reviewing the document set before submission, so a missing scan does not reset a processing window.
- Flagging the stay-registration step for travellers not staying in registered accommodation.
- Planning the wider trip, flights and accommodation, around the route your documents actually put you on.
If Uzbekistan is on your list for the months ahead, confirming your route before booking is a short conversation worth having. Our visa and travel services can check your specific passport and residence status against the current official rules.
