Sponsoring a Family Visit Visa to the UAE: What Residents Need to Prepare

Almost everything written for UAE residents about visas points outward. Which countries you can travel to, what those consulates want, how to build a travel profile. The question that arrives most often in an expatriate household, though, points the other way: my mother wants to visit, my brother wants to come for Eid, what do I need to do?

Sponsoring a visitor into the Emirates is a different exercise from applying to travel out of them. The authority is different, the evidence is about you rather than about the traveller, and the thing that decides eligibility is not the visitor's profile at all. It is your salary and your relationship to them.

The Rule That Decides Almost Everything

Income requirements for a visit visa are tiered by how closely the visitor is related to you. The UAE government platform sets them out as follows.

  • A first-degree relative: the sponsor must have a minimum monthly income of AED 4,000.
  • A second- or third-degree relative: the sponsor's monthly income must be at least AED 8,000.
  • A friend, meaning a non-relative: the sponsor is required to have a minimum monthly income of AED 15,000.

The degrees are defined rather than left to interpretation. First degree covers father, mother, spouse, son and daughter. Second degree covers siblings, grandparents and grandchildren. Third degree covers uncles, aunts and cousins. Anyone outside those categories is a friend for these purposes, whatever the relationship feels like in practice.

Proof of kinship matching the claimed degree is required, which is where most preparation time goes. A cousin is a third-degree relative only if you can document the link, and documenting a cousin relationship usually means producing two birth certificates and a marriage certificate belonging to a previous generation, from a country that may not issue them readily.

Requirements were checked against UAE government sources on 28 August 2026. Rules vary by emirate and change from time to time, so confirm with the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security, or with the residency department for your emirate, before relying on any of this.

Two Clocks That Are Easy to Confuse

A visit visa involves two separate periods, and mixing them up is the most common planning error.

The first is the validity of the entry permit. The holder must enter the UAE within the 60-day validity period of the entry permit, counted from its date of issue. That window may be extended for a similar period under the applicable rules.

The second is the permitted stay once they have arrived. Visit visas are commonly issued for 30, 60 or 90 days depending on the duration selected, and may be extended, provided the total stay does not exceed 120 days.

So a permit issued in September that is not used until November has consumed its entry window, not the visitor's stay. Applying months before a trip does not buy a longer visit; it risks the permit expiring before anyone travels.

What the Sponsor Has to Produce

The evidence is largely about the sponsor rather than the guest.

  • An active sponsor file that allows you to apply for visa and residence services.
  • Proof of income: a salary certificate for government, semi-government and free zone employees, an employment contract for private sector employees, or a partnership contract for partners in a business.
  • A copy of the visitor's passport, valid for at least six months.
  • Personal photographs of the visitor to the required specification.
  • Documents evidencing the relationship, such as a marriage contract or birth certificate, matching the degree claimed.
  • Medical insurance for the visitor covering the period of the visit.

Fees, security deposits and insurance charges are published by the relevant authority and differ between emirates and by the duration selected. A refundable security deposit is a normal part of the process in some emirates. Check the current published amounts rather than budgeting from what a colleague paid, since these are revised.

Where This Sits Next to a Residence Visa

A visit visa and a family residence visa are different things, and families sometimes begin one when they meant the other.

Sponsoring family for residence rather than a visit carries its own conditions. Employees can sponsor family members regardless of job title where they meet the published minimum salary, which the government platform states as AED 4,000, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation. Expatriate residents may sponsor a spouse, unmarried daughters, sons under a specified age, and children with special needs. Dubai publishes a substantially higher minimum salary for sponsoring parents, which is worth checking before making promises to anyone.

Other differences matter operationally. A resident sponsor has 60 days to apply for dependants' residence visas after they enter on an entry permit. Family members aged 18 and over must undergo and pass medical fitness testing at approved centres in the UAE. Dubai requires an attested tenancy contract with a minimum validity, along with recent utility bills, as evidence of accommodation.

If the intention is a visit, apply for a visit visa. Converting between the two is not a formality.

What the Visitor Should Carry

Approval is not the last step, and arrivals occasionally become difficult for reasons that have nothing to do with the permit itself. A visitor travelling to the Emirates for the first time, often an older parent who has not flown in years, benefits from arriving with the paperwork in hand rather than in an email account they cannot open at immigration.

  • A printed copy of the entry permit, not only a version on a phone.
  • The passport the permit was issued against, valid for the required margin.
  • Evidence of the medical insurance arranged for the visit.
  • The sponsor's contact details and address, written down.
  • Return or onward travel details, where the trip has fixed dates.

It is also worth the sponsor being reachable by phone on the day of arrival. Most queries at the border are resolved in minutes when the sponsor answers and cannot be resolved at all when they do not.

Planning Around Family Timing

Two practical points that come up in most households.

First, if a visitor is coming for a specific occasion, work backwards from the date of arrival and apply so that the entry permit is valid across it, rather than as early as possible. Early application is an outward-travel habit that works badly here.

Second, if the visitor holds a passport that requires a visa for onward travel, or if they plan to visit other countries in the region during their trip, that is a separate application to a separate authority. A UAE visit visa admits them to the UAE and nowhere else.

Questions UAE Residents Ask

My salary is AED 6,000. Can I sponsor my brother?

A sibling is a second-degree relative, for which the published minimum sponsor income is AED 8,000. A parent, spouse or child would fall in the first-degree band at AED 4,000.

Can I extend my mother's stay once she is here?

Visit visas may be extended, subject to the total stay not exceeding 120 days and to the applicable conditions and fees. Plan extensions before the current period lapses rather than after.

Does the visitor need medical insurance?

Medical insurance covering the visit is part of the requirement, and charges vary with the duration selected.

Do the rules differ between Dubai and the other emirates?

Yes. Procedures, documentary requirements and amounts vary by emirate, and the residency department for your emirate is the authority for your case.

How Patriot Pro Travel & Tourism Helps

Sponsorship cases fail on evidence rather than eligibility, and usually on the least glamorous document in the file.

  • Working out which relationship degree applies and therefore which income threshold you have to meet.
  • Identifying exactly what proof of kinship will be needed, and whether it has to be attested.
  • Checking that the visitor's passport validity clears the required margin before anything is filed.
  • Planning the entry-permit window around the actual arrival date rather than the application date.
  • Advising on the difference between a visit visa and family residence sponsorship before the wrong one is started.
  • Confirming current requirements with the authority for your emirate, since these differ and are revised.
