How Long Your Passport Should Be Valid Before Applying for a Visa
Passport validity is one of the most commonly overlooked factors in visa applications. Many UAE residents apply for a visa without checking whether their passport meets the validity requirements of the destination country — and then either have their application rejected or are turned away at the border.
This guide explains the rules that apply and when to consider renewing your passport before applying.
The General Rule: 6 Months Beyond Your Return Date
The most widely applied standard across international travel is that your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your planned return date. This means if you are travelling from June 1 to June 15, your passport must remain valid until at least December 15 of the same year.
This rule is enforced by many countries including the USA, Canada, Australia, and most of Southeast Asia. Violating it can result in being denied boarding at the airport — not just denied a visa.
Schengen Area Rule: 3 Months Beyond Return
The Schengen Area applies a slightly different standard. Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure date from the Schengen Area. However, Schengen rules also require that the passport was issued within the last 10 years.
In practice, many visa application officers still recommend ensuring at least 6 months of validity to avoid complications — particularly if your travel plans extend beyond a single short trip.
The Blank Pages Requirement
Beyond validity dates, most countries require that your passport has a minimum number of blank pages available for stamps and visa labels. The standard minimum is 2 blank pages, though some countries require more. For Schengen visas, the visa sticker itself occupies one full page, and entry and exit stamps require additional space.
Check your passport's remaining blank pages before applying, especially if you are a frequent traveller.
When to Renew Your Passport Before Applying
You should consider renewing your passport before applying for a visa if:
Your passport expires within 6 to 9 months — it is better to renew before investing in visa fees and travel bookings
Your passport has fewer than 3 blank pages remaining
Your passport has been damaged (water damage, torn pages, or a damaged chip can cause rejection at immigration even if the expiry date is valid)
Your passport shows a name or details inconsistent with other documents (common after marriage)
Can You Apply for a Visa With a Nearly Expired Passport?
Technically, if your passport meets the minimum validity requirement, you can apply. However, some embassies are reluctant to issue long-validity or multiple-entry visas to passports that will expire soon, as the visa validity cannot extend beyond the passport's own expiry. A visa issued for 6 months in a passport expiring in 4 months will be limited to the passport's expiry date.
If you are applying for a Schengen visa and your passport expires within a year, consider renewing first to allow a full-validity visa to be issued.
Travelling With a New and Old Passport
If you renew your passport after obtaining a visa in your old passport, you can still use that visa — but you must travel with both passports. Present both at immigration so the officer can verify the valid visa in the old document alongside your new valid travel document.
UAE Resident Context
UAE residents are issued residency visas inside their passports. If your passport is renewed, your UAE residency visa will need to be transferred or re-stamped. Ensure your UAE residency is valid and reflected in your current passport before applying for any visa.
