Kenya eTA From the UAE: How the Electronic Travel Authorisation Works for Safari Trips

October 23, 2026•7 min read

Kenya abolished its visitor visa requirement from January 2024 and moved entry permission online. For anyone in the Emirates planning a Maasai Mara safari or a stretch on the coast, that matters: there is no consulate queue any more, only an online authorisation to get right before you fly. The system is the Electronic Travel Authorisation, the eTA, and it now sits at the centre of almost every Kenya trip booked from the UAE.

Details below were checked directly against the official eTA portal, etakenya.go.ke, Kenya's Directorate of Immigration Services and the Kenya Ministry of Health's traveller pages, on 28 September 2026. Fees, exemptions and health requirements are set by the Kenyan authorities and revised without much notice, so confirm your own case on the official portal before applying.

Who Actually Needs an eTA

The rule that runs through every visa question out of the Emirates applies here too: eligibility follows the passport, not the Dubai or Abu Dhabi residence visa in it. Unless their nationality or status is on Kenya's exemption list, visitors need an approved eTA before the journey starts, infants and children included.

Kenya's Directorate of Immigration Services publishes a defined exemption list: holders of Kenya permanent residence, valid work permits and passes; travellers whose passports already carry a valid Kenya re-entry pass; citizens of the East African Community states (Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda) for stays up to 180 days; and a longer list of other nationalities exempt for up to 90 or 60 days, alongside transit passengers who do not leave the airport. The United Arab Emirates is not on that exempt list, so a UAE passport holder needs an eTA regardless of residence status, and a non-UAE passport does not become exempt because its holder lives in Dubai. Our visa and travel services work through this exemption list against your specific passport before you apply.

When to Apply, and What It Costs

The eTA is applied for online before departure, per traveller, not issued at the airport. The official portal states applications are generally processed within three working days, or 72 hours, though it can take longer depending on verification, and recommends submitting at least two weeks before travel. An expedited service is available for a faster decision.

The portal's eligibility page lists fees by category: a Standard eTA, for one entry, at US$30; a Transit eTA, for travellers on a transit flight through Kenya, at US$20; and One Year and Five Year Multi-Entry options, the latter reserved for American nationals, at their own separately listed fees. The FAQ adds that expedited processing costs an additional US$100. Verify them when you apply, since fee schedules move.

Documents to Have Ready

An approved eTA is valid for travel within 90 days of issue, and the length of stay itself is decided at the point of entry, not by the eTA. The portal sets out what an application needs before you start it:

  • A passport valid for at least six months after your planned arrival in Kenya, with at least one blank page.
  • A recent selfie or passport-style photo.
  • A working email address and phone number.
  • A travel itinerary covering arrival and departure.
  • Confirmation of your accommodation booking.
  • A payment method for the eTA fee.

Some categories need more: a referral letter for medical travel, an invitation letter for a conference, an employment contract for work travel, or a host's invitation and identity document for a family visit. Match your documents to the actual purpose of the trip.

Yellow Fever: Requirement or Recommendation

Kenya's Ministry of Health states, on its own traveller pages, that travellers arriving in Kenya from countries where yellow fever is endemic should present a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. That is a condition on where the journey starts, not a blanket rule. The UAE is not on the World Health Organization's list of countries with yellow fever transmission risk, so a direct Dubai or Abu Dhabi departure does not, on that basis, trigger the requirement. The Ministry also lists exemptions from vaccination, including infants under nine months outside outbreak conditions, pregnant women outside outbreak conditions, people with a severe egg-protein allergy, and people with severe immunodeficiency. If your routing touches an endemic country, check Kenya's current requirement before travelling. The return leg is a separate question: check the UAE's own current health rules for travellers arriving from Kenya too.

Safari and Coast Season, in General Terms

Kenya's two draws for UAE travellers sit at opposite ends of the country. The Maasai Mara's wildebeest migration is broadly associated with the drier middle months of the year, though timing shifts with rainfall and is never a fixed date. The coast around Mombasa, Diani and Malindi suits a warm beach break during the Gulf winter. Neither has anything to do with immigration rules, but popular dates fill early, so plan the eTA inside a booking made ahead of the season you want.

Common Mistakes

  • Applying through a site that is not the official portal, and paying more than the published official fee for the same authorisation.
  • Assuming a UAE residence visa changes eligibility or exempts a passport not on Kenya's own list.
  • Leaving the application to the days before departure instead of the two weeks the portal recommends.
  • Submitting one eTA for a group, when a separate application is required for every traveller, children included.
  • Treating a yellow fever certificate as universally required or unnecessary instead of checking the actual routing.

Strategy for a UAE-Based Applicant

Start the eTA application as soon as travel dates and accommodation are fixed, since both the itinerary and an accommodation confirmation are part of the form, and remember the approval is valid for travel within 90 days of issue. Apply only through the channels the portal itself names: the etakenya.go.ke website or the "Kenya Travel Authorisation" mobile application. Keep the confirmation email and the approved eTA, printed or saved to your phone, since it must be shown at departure and arrival. Where a connecting flight passes through a country with yellow fever risk, resolve that question before you fly, not at the gate. If you would rather have the documents checked before you submit, our appointments page is the place to start.

Watch for Unofficial Look-Alike Sites

Search results for the Kenya eTA can include sites that are not the government portal. The official portal's own FAQ is direct: applications must be completed only through the official website or the official mobile application, one per traveller. A site charging noticeably more than the official eligibility page, or one that does not clearly identify itself as etakenya.go.ke, is a warning sign.

Questions UAE Residents Ask

Does holding a UAE residence visa exempt me from Kenya's eTA?

No. Kenya's exemption list runs on passport nationality and specific categories such as East African Community citizenship, Kenyan permanent residence, or transit status. A UAE residence visa is not one of the listed exemptions.

How far ahead should I apply if I am booking flights soon?

The official portal recommends at least two weeks before travel, alongside a general processing time of three working days. Apply as soon as your itinerary and accommodation are confirmed rather than the week of departure.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate flying directly from the UAE?

Kenya's Ministry of Health requires it from travellers arriving from countries where yellow fever is endemic. The UAE is not on that list, so a direct itinerary from the Emirates does not, on that basis, trigger the requirement. A routing through an endemic country can change the answer.

Can I use any website that comes up when I search for the Kenya eTA?

No. The official portal's own guidance states applications must go through etakenya.go.ke or the official mobile application only. Only the official portal shows the published fee, and only an approval issued there is the authorisation you will be asked to show.

How Patriot Pro Travel & Tourism Helps

A Kenya safari is usually booked around fixed camp and flight dates, which makes the eTA one part of the plan that has to line up correctly rather than something left until the last minute.

  • Reviewing your passport and travel profile against Kenya's current eTA exemption and eligibility rules.
  • Checking that your documents, including passport validity and accommodation confirmation, match what the application asks for.
  • Confirming which eTA category fits your trip, whether a single safari and coast itinerary or a longer stay.
  • Flagging common mistakes before they become a problem at the airport, including routing questions that affect yellow fever requirements.
  • Helping strengthen the application itself so supporting documents match the stated purpose of travel.
  • Planning the eTA timeline alongside flights and accommodation, so the approval and the travel dates line up.

If Kenya is on your list for this season, the eTA is worth planning alongside flights and camps rather than after them. Our contact page is the fastest way to reach us with questions about a specific itinerary.
