Ireland Visa From the UAE: Requirements, Timeline, and Common Mistakes

August 21, 202610 min read

The itinerary looks tidy on paper. Four nights in Paris, three in Amsterdam, then a short hop to Dublin before flying home to Dubai. One visa, one fee, one appointment. It comes apart at an airline counter, because Ireland is a European Union member that never joined the Schengen Area. The Department of Foreign Affairs states it without hedging: "A Schengen visa or UK visa is not valid for travel to Ireland." Citizens Information, the Irish state's public information service, puts the boundary the other way round, noting that the Schengen Area "includes the member states of the EU except for Ireland and Cyprus."

Two Countries on the Map, Two Applications in Practice

Ireland runs its own visa system, its own online platform and its own visa offices. A Dublin leg attached to a Schengen trip is a second application with its own fee, document set and processing clock, and an Irish visa gives you nothing at a Schengen border. The practical consequence is sequencing rather than cost: from the UAE the Irish decision is usually the slower of the two, so start it first. If you are planning the continental half of the same journey, it is worth reading how a Schengen application is put together for UAE residents before deciding what to submit when.

Your Passport Decides. Your Emirates ID Only Decides Where You Apply.

Immigration Service Delivery is explicit that "regardless of where you live," the requirement rests on nationality. Checked against the official nationality list on 26 July 2026: Emirati passport holders need no visa. Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan, Nepali, Egyptian, Jordanian, Nigerian and Kenyan nationals do. So do nationals of Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain, which surprises residents who assume the whole GCC travels alike. The list is amended periodically, so check the current official table rather than what a colleague did last year.

UAE residence does two things. It sets where you apply, since applications must be made from your home country or the country where you are legally resident. And it adds a requirement: alongside a copy of your residence card, you must show "at least 3 months' permission to remain in that country after the date you plan to leave Ireland." A residence visa expiring six weeks after your return date is a problem to fix before you open the application.

What the Short Stay 'C' Visa Permits

A short stay or 'C' visa allows travel to Ireland for up to 90 days for tourism, visiting family or friends, a short course, marriage, or medical treatment. It does not permit paid or unpaid work of any kind, or use of publicly funded services such as a public hospital. Ireland issues no family visas and no e-visas, so every traveller, infants included, needs a separate application.

You choose single or multiple entry when you apply and pay accordingly. Multiple entry is at the visa officer's discretion, normally reserved for applicants with a compliant travel history, typically two previous Irish visas used without incident, or documented recurring business travel. Pay the multiple-entry fee and receive single entry, and the difference is not refunded. One further distinction catches people out: the dates on the visa are the dates between which you must travel to Ireland, not the period you may remain. An immigration officer at the port decides that, and can refuse entry despite a valid visa.

AVATS First, Then Paper

The application starts online and ends on a counter. You complete the AVATS form, print the summary sheets, sign and date them, and keep the eight-digit AVATS reference from the first page. From the UAE the pack goes to VFS Global, described on the Embassy's own pages as its official partner, at the Abu Dhabi or Dubai centres, with premium centres also operating in Sharjah, Ajman and Al Ain. VFS forwards it to the Embassy of Ireland Abu Dhabi for decision.

Fees verified on 26 July 2026 are €60 single entry, €100 multiple entry and €25 transit, payable in local currency at the applicable AED rate, plus a separate VFS service charge. The fee is an administration charge and is not refunded if the application is refused or withdrawn. Documents must be hardcopy; USB sticks, memory cards and file-sharing links are not accepted, nor are documents in envelopes or folders. Originals and photocopies must be separated, and anything not in English or Irish needs a certified translation.

The Checklist Decisions Are Actually Made On

  • A current passport valid at least six months beyond the date you plan to leave Ireland, plus photocopies of every page of any previous passports.

  • Proof of UAE permission to remain, running at least three months past that same departure date.

  • Two colour passport photographs, each signed on the back in your own script with the AVATS transaction number.

  • Signed, dated summary sheets and an application letter giving your reason for travel, arrival and departure dates, where you will stay, and who is paying.

  • A holiday plan with printed accommodation confirmations showing the dates of each stay.

  • Finances: an original bank statement on headed paper showing six months of movement. Internet printouts are accepted only if certified by the bank, and large or unusual movements need a written explanation. No minimum balance is published; sufficiency is assessed against your circumstances.

  • Evidence of obligations to return: your three most recent payslips and an employer letter confirming length of service, the dates of your absence, and your return-to-work date.

  • Full disclosure of any previous visa refusal by any country, with the original refusal letter. Withholding it results in refusal.

  • Insurance is not required with the application, but the visa officer may request it and you must present it at the port of entry.

How Long It Takes From Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Visa Office publishes its own targets, and they run longer than most applicants expect. Checked on 26 July 2026, those targets are roughly six to eight weeks for tourist and visit family or friend applications, around four weeks for business and conference, four to eight weeks for study and employment, and up to twelve months for join family. The clock starts when the application reaches the Embassy and excludes transit between VFS and the Embassy, which the office states can run from two days to more than ten in each direction. It also states plainly that requests to expedite will not be entertained. Decisions appear in a weekly report each Friday, searchable by reference number.

Immigration Service Delivery recommends applying three months before travel; the Abu Dhabi office recommends up to 90 days ahead; the Department of Foreign Affairs advises allowing eight weeks. The message is consistent. A tourist application started six weeks before an August departure is already late.

Why a Weak Application Now Costs More

Verified on 26 July 2026: with effect from 1 June 2026, applicants can no longer appeal the refusal of a short-stay visa application. Appeals continue only for short stay applications made under the EU Free Movement Directive as a family member of an EU, EEA or Swiss citizen. For everyone else a refusal means a fresh AVATS application and a second fee, addressing the reasons in the decision letter. The former free appeal within two months no longer applies to ordinary visit applications.

The UK Routes, and Why They Rarely Help From Dubai

Two schemes let a UK visa reach Ireland, and both are narrower than their reputations. The Short Stay Visa Waiver Programme lets nationals of a listed group of countries, including India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Türkiye, Serbia, Kazakhstan and several Gulf states, travel on to Ireland after landing lawfully in the UK on an eligible UK short-stay visit visa. A UK Electronic Travel Authorisation cannot be used for it. The Irish stay is capped at 90 days or the time left on the UK permission, whichever is shorter, and the scheme is not reciprocal. The British-Irish Visa Scheme, which endorses a visa 'BIVS' for travel across the Common Travel Area, is open only to Chinese nationals living in China, Hong Kong or Macau, and Indian nationals living in India, at the time of application. An Indian national applying from Dubai falls outside it.

Mistakes That Keep Repeating

  • Building a Europe trip on a Schengen visa and adding Dublin at the end. It is a separate visa, and the timeline is the constraint, not the fee.

  • Booking the Dublin flights first. The guidance is unambiguous: do not buy tickets before the outcome is known, and the visa office accepts no responsibility for missed travel.

  • Applying six weeks out because that felt sufficient for a past Schengen trip. Against a six-to-eight week target plus transit each way, it is not.

  • Checking passport validity against the travel date rather than six months past departure from Ireland, and forgetting the residence visa needs three months beyond that same date.

  • Omitting an old refusal from another country, which turns a survivable weakness into an automatic refusal.

  • Submitting an uncertified internet bank statement, or six months of statements with an unexplained large deposit in the middle.

Questions UAE Residents Ask

I hold a valid multi-entry Schengen visa. Does that shorten anything on the Irish side?

It does not replace the Irish visa, but it is useful evidence. A record of compliant European travel supports your credibility and any request for multiple entry, so include the passport pages showing those visas and their entry stamps.

My UAE residence visa expires two months after I return from Dublin. Is that a problem?

Yes. The requirement is at least three months of permission to remain in the UAE after your planned departure from Ireland. Renew the residence visa first, then apply.

Can I ask for multiple entry on a first Irish application?

You can, and the extra fee is not refunded if single entry is granted instead. Multiple entry usually follows two previous compliant Irish visas, or documented recurring business travel supported by letters from your UAE employer and the company in Ireland.

My family of four is travelling together. Is that one application?

No. Ireland issues no family visas, so it is four AVATS applications, four fees and four document sets. A parent or legal guardian applies on behalf of anyone under 18.

How Patriot Pro Travel & Tourism Helps

Most of the difficulty is not the form. It is spotting early which passport in a household sits on which route, then working backwards from a published processing target instead of forwards from a hoped-for departure date.

  • Reading the traveller profile passport by passport, so a mixed-nationality family knows who needs what before anything is booked.

  • Checking passport validity, residence permission and photograph specifications against what the official process requires.

  • Advising which visa category and entry type fit the real purpose and pattern of travel.

  • Pointing out the errors that recur from the UAE, particularly undisclosed refusals and residence permissions that expire too soon.

  • Helping assemble financial and employment evidence into a coherent pack rather than a pile of paper.

  • Building the travel plan around the published timeline, so flights and hotels follow the decision instead of preceding it.

Decisions belong to the Irish authorities alone, and no agency influences or accelerates them. What can be shaped is how complete, consistent and well timed a submission is. You can review the travel and documentation assistance available to UAE residents, or arrange help with booking a visa centre appointment once the paperwork is ready to submit.
